Humans have been obsessed with eyes since the beginning of time. From Cleopatra’s gleaming, kohl-lined black pools to the official induction of “smize” to pop culture vernacular (thanks, Tyra!), our fixation with these windows to the soul has only increased with time. But as much as we treasure our eyes for allowing us to see (and also providing a blank canvas for our Naked2 Palette), our eyes can also betray us—like when they’re surrounded by dark circles after a late night, erm, socializing.
On mornings (or afternoons—no judgment) when you wake up with your eyes on the swollen/tired/puffy/crepe-y side, fear not.
Here’s a 9-step plan for bigger eyes, and, it’s so easy.
Smooth an eye cream or balm like Kate Somerville’s Goal Milk Eye Balm below your eyes, gently tapping it in to diffuse and hydrate fine lines. Then, dab a creamy concealer in a V-shape below your eyes and blend in with your finger.
Give your lashes two pumps using an eyelash curler like Shu Uemura’s Eyelash Curler .
Add a natural eye shadow base
Apply a neutral eye shadow base across your entire eyelid using a soft eye shadow brush. Caroline uses White Chocolate and Champagne Truffle in Too Faced’s Chocolate Bar Eye Shadow Palette.
To subtly accentuate your eyes, employ the makeup artist trick of tightlining (it will also make your lashes look thicker). Spritz an angled eyeliner brush and dip it in an inky black eye shadow. Apply a thin line as close to your lashes as you can, wiggling it in between your lash line.
Add shadow to lower lash line
Using a small flat shadow brush, sweep a matte chocolate eye shadow along your lower lash line.
Add a nude eyeliner to your waterline
Lightly trace a creamy nude liner, like Stila’s Kajal Eyeliner in Topaz, along your entire waterline to instantly fake eight hours of sleep.
Highlight inner corners
Take a champagne eye shadow or highlighter and apply it to the inner corners of your eyes.
To finish, wiggle a volumizing (but not clumpy) mascara, like L’Oréal’s Carbon Black ($8), from the root to the tip of your lashes. Turn your mascara wand and lightly sweep it across your lower lashes to define them.
Brush eyebrows up
Take a tinted brow gel and brush your brows up and out. If you aren’t as brow-endowed, lightly fill them in with a soft pencil or powder before this step.
